A view from the Hills

There were two hill races over the weekend with several Hawks taking part. Firstly the annual Ben Nevis race with over 4000 ft of ascent and treacherous descent. 3 Hawks were taking part. 1st Hawks up and down was Craig Love in a creditable time of 1hour 58 secs. That put him in 57th place and he was followed by Steve Matthews in 2:06 and 104th place. Charlie Love competing in his 18th Ben nevis race was home in 2:46. Well done to them

On Sunday, on a rather different scale, there were 5 Hawks taking part in the Blaigowrie Highland games hill race. 400m of gentle climbing and only 4.8 km in length but it was part of our championship series and a race is a race as they say. Dave Mitchell was 1st Hawk home followed by Dave hanlon, then Steve Matthews (suffering from his Ben Nevis race the day before) Phil Forte and then Lyn Hanlon.  Lyn was well chuffed getting a £10 prize for 4th lady (which I promptly spent on beer)

Club News Update

Welfare

In keeping with UK Athletics Welfare policy could I remind all members in contact with junior members of the Club that they need to fill out Disclosure Forms on a three yearly basis.  Please contact me at the club and I will issue the relevant paperwork.  Also I am very keen to document any courses/workshops that coaches and assistants go on to maintain our Clubmark status.  Again please let me know details and give me a copy of the programme for the file.  Despite the recession the Sports Council provide grants for such courses but we need plenty of notice to apply.

Please note that the Track is no longer hired by the Club on Tuesday and Thursday nights so normal admission prices apply.

Scottish Womens Athletic League

Hawks were involved in the final match of the season on Sunday with good performances.  The womens 4 x 400m relay team gave the most impressive run of the day with Laura Brown and Susan Young fighting through to take first place from Edinburgh AC.  They were not looking too chipper just at the finish but a great race for the supporters.

Ron McIntosh report from the Transplant Games

On Thursday 19th August ,I ventured down to the lovely city of Bath ,because i had entered the BRITISH TRANSPLANT GAMES,held at the UNIVERSITY OF BATH.I travelled down with the NINEWELLS ,DUNDEE TRANSPLANT TEAM,which consisted of 5 members, ironically all of us being kidney transplant recipients.

We were also the largest team representing hospitals throughout  SCOTLAND. Of the 5 members, unfortunately,I was the only one who failed to win a medal, but  my own personal medal was the fact that I am the only ever double below knee leg amputee to ever enter the 5k [3.1miles] racewalk in the 33 year history of the event which was founded in 1978. Also ,the fact that I managed a personal best time of 48 minutes 33 seconds on an extremely hilly 4 lap route, meant that my trip to the transplant games was well worth it. I have only had my new kidney for 15 months, which as far as i am led to believe, is regarded as a new transplant. One of the main things I noticed is the extremely high level of fitness that transplant patients can achieve and in lots of cases; far superior to able bodied athletes.

Heart transplant recipients can actually achieve a far higher level of fitness than they ever had throughout their entire life.A classic example of the huge success rate and benefits,as well as the huge life changing experiences for the recipients. All in all, it was a very worthwhile experience and I am now looking forward to the 2011 BRITISH TRANSPLANT GAMES to be held in BELFAST.
